Wafa: The clash we are witnessing around the world is not a clash of religions, or a clash of civilizations, it is a clash between two opposites, between two eras, it is a clash between a mentality that belongs to the Middle Ages and another mentality that belongs to the 21st century.
It is a clash between civilization and backwardness, between the civilized and the primitive, between barbarity and rationality. It is a clash between freedom and oppression, between democracy and dictatorship. It is a clash between human rights, on the one hand, and the violation of these rights, on the other hand. What we see today is not a clash of civilizations, civilizations do not clash, but compete.

Other: I understand from your words that what is happening today is a clash between the culture of the West, and the backwardness and ignorance of the Muslims?

Wafa: Yes, that is what I mean.

Other: Who came up with the concept of a clash of civilization? Was it not Samuel Huntington? It was not Bin Laden. I would like to discuss this issue, if you don’t mind…

Wafa: The Muslims are the ones who began using this expression. The Muslims are the ones who began the clash of civilizations. The Prophet of Islam said: “I was ordered to fight the people until they believe in Allah and His Messenger.” When the Muslims divided the people into Muslims and non-Muslims, and called to fight the others until they believe in what they themselves believe, they started this clash, and began this war. In order to stop this war, they must reexamine their Islamic books and curricula, which are full of calls for takfir and fighting the infidels. My colleague has said that he never offends other people’s beliefs. What civilization on the face of this earth allows him to call other people by names they did not choose for themselves? Once he calls them Ahl Al-Dhimma, another time he calls them the “People of the Book,” and yet another time he compares them to apes and pigs, or he calls the Christians “those who incur Allah’s wrath.” Who told you they are “People of the Book”? They are not the People of the Book, they are the people of many books. All the useful scientific books that you have today are theirs, the fruit of their free and creative thinking. What gives you the right to call them “those who incur Allah’s Wrath,” or “those who have gone astray,” I am not a Christian, a Muslim, or a Jew. I am a secular human being. I do not believe in the supernatural, but I respect others’ right to believe in it.

Imam: Are you a heretic?

Wafa: I am a secular human being who does not believe in the supernatural…

Imam: If you are a heretic, there is no point in rebuking you, since you have blashphemed against Islam, the Prophet, and the Koran…

Wafa: These are personal matters that do not concern you. Brother, you can believe in stones, as long as you don’t throw them at me. You are free to worship whoever you want, but other people’s beliefs are not your concern, whether they believe that the Messiah is God, son of Mary, or that Satan is God, son of Mary. Let people have their beliefs. The Jews have come from the tragedy (of the Holocaust), and forced the world to respect them, with their knowledge, not with their terror, with their work, not their crying and yelling. Humanity owes most of the discoveries and science of the 19th and 20th centuries to Jewish scientists. 15 million people, scattered throughout the world, united and won their rights through work and knowledge. We have not seen a single Jew blow himself up in a German restaurant. We have not seen a single Jew destroy a church. We have not seen a single Jew protest by killing people. The Muslims have turned three Buddha statues into rubble. We have not seen a single Buddhist burn down a Mosque, kill a Muslim, or burn down an embassy. Only the Muslims defend their beliefs by burning down churches, killing people, and destroying embassies. This path will not yield any results. The Muslims must ask themselves what they can do for humankind, before they demand that humankind respect them.

Georgie Porgie

Georgie Porgie, Puddin' and Pie,
Kissed the girls and made them cry,
When the boys came out to play
Georgie Porgie ran away.

Somehow I just think this is appropriate. The fact of the matter is the President has made mistakes as I and many others see it. He has done some things right, but overall, when he decided on the course of action of invading Iraq and going after Saddam Hussein he blew it. I believe the only reason we really went into Iraq is that PGW wanted revenge on Saddam for putting a contract out on his father. So here we are, sacrificing American lives for people who as a whole do not really appreciate it and are not willing to stand up for themselves.

By the way, what makes us (America) think we are qualified to tell the rest of the world how to govern themselves. We are not without crime and corruption. It wasn't that long ago in our history rival fire departments would fight over territory. We are still killing each other on the streets of our cities. We don't have the resources to be the world's police. These are all reasons we shouldn't be in Iraq. The current administration is wrong and I cannot wait till the next election of choosing the lesser of two evils is over and we have someone new in office. It is long past time for him and his oil cronies to go.

Now Dick Cheney, oil company lackey, he is dangerous. If you don't agree, go look at his taxes.

IT IS THE SOLDIER

It is the Soldier, not the minister,
Who has given us freedom of religion.
It is the Soldier, not the reporter,
Who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the Soldier, not the poet,
Who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer,
Who has given us freedom to protest.
It is the Soldier, not the lawyer,
Who has given us the right to a fair trial.
It is the Soldier, not the politician,
Who has given us the right to vote.
It is the Soldier who salutes the flag,

Who serves beneath the flag,

And whose coffin is draped by the flag,

Who allows the protester to burn the flag.

by Charles M. Province or Father Dennis Edward O'Brian, USMC

Poem obtained this from:

In rememberance of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to defend our nation and its citizens, I am posting the poem, "It is the Soldier," by Charles M. Province. (Thanks to Karl B for posting the complete poem in the comments.)

I am a united States Sailor. I do not take offense that soldier is used, I embrace the term to include all members of the Armed Forces whether they be Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen, Coast Gaurdsmen or National Guardsmen. Here is to all of them who, "Stand the Watch!" Here is to you my brothers and sisters whether you are guarding the homeland or overseas. The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious untothee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.

Put Dumbledore Back in the Closet or For The Love Of Money

See http://www.time.com/time/arts/article/0,8599,1674550,00.html for original article by John Cloud.

I imagine after reading Mr Cloud's article that he and I would see eye to eye on very few things but this article is one of those places. I can't say I'm a great Harry Potter fan, though I know people who are. I have seen the movies when they came out on DVD. The stories are entertaining. I can even imagine that Sir Ian McKellen, http://www.mckellen.com/, is kicking himself for not taking the part when offered upon the death of Richard Harris, that is, if he was even asked. I do think he would have given an outstanding performance as he is a very good actor. I think Peter O'toole would have been even better (funny, upon looking up some background information I found that the Harris family wanted Peter O'toole to take over the part!) I'm sure Sir Ian did not want to be typecast into the role of Wizard after his performance as Gandalf.

That all being said... I believe the only reason that J.(o)K.(e) Rowling did not mention her ideas on Dumbledore's love interests in any of the seven books or till after they all hit the market and sold in incredible numbers was GREED. If she had been open about this bomb she chose to drop after the (hopefully) final book she would not have sold as well as she did and would have less money in purse. She is a coward who chose to hide her ideas so that she did not suffer the consequences of putting them out there. There are many people across the world who would take a dim view of a major lead character who is gay. Homosexuality will be a discussion of another post, but not on my political forum (watch in http://obadiahsvision.blogspot.com/). Personally I think the whole Harry Potter phenomena has been way overblown. I hope the box office sales of her movies suffer. I think it was a callous move and children will be hurt by it (then again, maybe their parents should never have let them read the H.P. books in the first place.)

What shall we see...?

What shall we see by the dawn's early light? How many soldiers and sailors dead? Why are they dying? What is the goal? What is the purpose? Where will the next terror attack come? Who will suffer? Who is telling the truth? Who is lying? Who stands with us? Who stands against us? What kind of a world will our children grow up in? And who is "us" anyway?
1984 is here and gone, big brother and the patriot act are here. Is big brother here for our protection or is he watching us? Or is it one and the same?
